A Sanctum is one of the sealed strongholds the Architects built beneath the surface and have kept ever since. From above it betrays itself only as a half-buried doorway set into some larger ruin; below, it opens into a precise, engineered world of filtered air, smooth pale halls, soft calibrated light, and locked doors that yield only to the right keys. Each Sanctum is built around the listening machinery at its core, where its reclusive masters spend their days.
A Sanctum is guarded not by its frail masters but by their machines: small flying Scout fixers and yellow-shelled Sonari androids patrol the halls and answer intruders with lethal force. Deeper in waits the Sanctum’s keeper — a red-shirted Architect, dangerous less for its strength than for the way it reads your moves before you make them and bends the surrounding machinery, and your own mind, against you. (For all of these, see Architects.)
